Between Dreaming and Dawn | 41 x 29.5 | cyanotype double exposure, collage and graphite
I'm a Northern California artist creating work that quietly celebrates our natural world. I’m drawn to the pattern of sunlight spilling through leaves and the peaceful feeling created by the translucent patterns moving in and out of focus. I strive to make work that is atmospheric, intriguing, and perhaps a bit magical.
My primary medium is cyanotype, an alternative photographic process that uses UV light to produce deep blue images. I expose my prints outdoors in the California sunshine.
I’m always on the lookout for attractive plants to print. I often find them hanging over fences in the alleys of my neighborhood or on the roadside. In my studio, calling upon my experience as a painter and graphic designer, I carefully compose these foraged leaves and stems to record a photographic impression of their shadows.
After printing, I consider each print asking myself “what does it need?” Then, using other media including natural toners, collage, watercolor and colored pencil, I add details, interest, and depth. Each finished piece is truly a mixed media creation.
In my work, I joyfully experiment with new materials, work through logistical challenges, and often come up with my own techniques. There’s an element of serendipity as I print each piece, and the process fascinates me as much as the product!
Through my botanical paintings, I hope to create a feeling of tranquility and a deeper appreciation of the everyday beauty that surrounds us.
